A Bold Leap in African Urban Mobility – Dodai’s Electric Revolution in Ethiopia

In the dynamic world of urban transportation, change is no longer on the horizon—it is here, roaring on the streets of Addis Ababa with the hum of electric motors. Ethiopian e-mobility startup Dodai, founded by Yuma Sasaki, is spearheading a paradigm shift that could redefine Africa’s approach to mobility, sustainability, and innovation.

With a vision to provide affordable, reliable, and sustainable transportation, Dodai’s entry into the Ethiopian market marks more than just the arrival of electric vehicles—it’s a declaration that the era of fossil fuel dependence in African cities is drawing to a close.

A Foundation for Change

Dodai, meaning "foundation" in Japanese, was established in 2021 to address Ethiopia's pressing urban mobility challenges. With over 120 million people, abundant renewable energy resources, and a rapidly urbanizing population, Ethiopia provides fertile ground for an e-mobility revolution. The startup designs, assembles, and sells electric motorcycles, three-wheelers, and bicycles that promise to transform everyday commutes.

In an exclusive interview, Sasaki shared the ethos behind Dodai:"E-mobility is more than a technological shift; it’s a lifeline for economic growth, climate action, and quality of life. By making these solutions accessible, we aim to empower communities and pave the way for sustainable cities across the continent."

Riding High: The Dodai Advantage

At the heart of Dodai’s offering are electric motorcycles powered by advanced lithium batteries—a first in Ethiopia. These batteries outlast their competitors eightfold, making Dodai’s motorcycles not only environmentally friendly but also economically advantageous. For riders, this means lower maintenance costs and a product that stands the test of time.

Dodai’s vehicles, priced at just 150,000 Ethiopian birr (approximately $1,170), are accessible to a wide market thanks to partnerships with microfinance institutions like VisionFund. Flexible credit plans, starting as low as $62.50 per month, are helping to break down financial barriers to entry.

The response has been overwhelming. In just four years, Dodai has established manufacturing processes capable of producing 200 units per month, with plans to scale production to 1,500 units monthly.

Battery Swapping: A Game-Changer for Urban Mobility

Central to Dodai’s strategy is the deployment of battery-swapping stations, a revolutionary model that minimizes downtime for riders. With the support of the Ethiopian government, Dodai plans to open 300 battery-swapping stations over the next three years. This infrastructure will enable riders to replace depleted batteries with fully charged ones in minutes, making electric mobility seamless and practical.

"Battery swapping eliminates the common pain points of charging infrastructure, such as time and accessibility," Sasaki explained. "This innovation could significantly accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles across Ethiopia and inspire similar models across the continent."

A Bright Future for E-Mobility in Africa

Dodai’s impact extends beyond transportation. By embracing local manufacturing, the company is creating jobs and boosting Ethiopia’s economic landscape. Its alignment with the Ethiopian government’s vision of a greener future ensures that Dodai is not just a startup—it’s a critical player in the nation’s energy transition.

The road ahead is promising. With 100,000 EVs already in circulation in Ethiopia and projections indicating a quadrupling by 2032, the market is ripe for transformation. For early movers like Dodai, the opportunity is immense, and the message is clear: e-mobility is no longer a luxury but a necessity.

Makasi Media’s Take

Dodai’s success is emblematic of a broader movement reshaping African cities. It’s a powerful reminder that innovation, when aligned with local needs and sustainability, can bring transformative change. Ethiopia may be Dodai’s starting point, but the ripples of its electric revolution are bound to spread across the continent.

As Dodai builds the foundation for a new era of mobility, one thing is certain: Africa’s cities are poised for a greener, more electrified future, and startups like Dodai are leading the charge.
