IZI Secures $222K Grant to Expand Rwanda’s Electric Bus Fleet

IZI, a key player in Rwanda's electric mobility sector, has secured a $222,000 grant from the country’s Green Fund. This funding is a significant milestone in advancing Its electric bus fleet. The grant will support the expansion of eco-friendly transport solutions across the country. With this funding, IZI aims to strengthen the public transport system, making it more sustainable and efficient. This move also aligns with Rwanda’s broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and promoting green mobility.

About IZI and Its Mission

Established in April 2024, IZI Electric is revolutionizing Rwanda's public transportation system through sustainable solutions. In partnership with Kigali Bus Services, IZI introduced its initial fleet of five battery-powered buses in Kigali, marking a significant step toward eco-friendly urban mobility. Within just four months, these buses covered over 74,000 fuel-free kilometres, transported more than 250,000 passengers, reduced operating costs by 38%, and mitigated over 60 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

IZI's mission is to make public transport accessible, clean, and efficient for all. To this end, it focuses on innovation and sustainability to minimize environmental impact.

Details of the $222K Grant

In October 2024, IZI secured a grant of approximately $222,000 (RWF 300 million) from the Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA). This funding is designated for the deployment of five additional battery-powered buses in Kigali, enhancing the city's sustainable public transport system. The grant will also support the establishment of a state-of-the-art battery maintenance and repair facility in Kigali, bolstering the country’s green vehicle ecosystem.

The Rwandan government, through initiatives like this grant, plays a pivotal role in promoting the growth of electric vehicles by providing policy support and incentives for sustainable transport projects.

Expansion Plans and New Infrastructure

IZI plans to introduce five more electric buses to its growing fleet. Alongside fleet expansion, the company will set up battery maintenance and repair facilities to support long-term operations.

The vision extends to scaling Rwanda’s electric school bus fleet, making sustainable transport accessible to students. IZI will also implement real-time data tracking through its Connect platform, improving efficiency and performance monitoring.

Impact on Rwanda’s Public Transport

The investment will significantly improve Rwanda’s public transport system. It will enhance accessibility, reduce operational costs, and increase efficiency. The electric bus fleet will help lower fuel expenses for operators and reduce CO2 emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment.

Moreover, the expansion will create job opportunities in the nation’s growing EV sector, supporting economic growth and sustainability.

Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite the progress, challenges remain. High import tariffs and limited infrastructure pose barriers to growth. However, Rwanda is actively working to improve electric vehicle charging for bus fleets and expand supportive infrastructure.

Looking ahead, IZI plans further expansions, supported by government incentives and private-sector partnerships. The future of Rwanda’s electric mobility looks promising.

Conclusion

The $222,000 grant marks a pivotal step for IZI and Rwanda’s electric transport sector. This funding will drive the growth of the electric bus fleet, supporting sustainable mobility. Rwanda’s commitment to green transport continues to set an example for the region. With ongoing investments and innovations, the future of electric mobility in Africa is bright and full of potential.
