Spiro Powers Up Nigeria with Electric Motorbike Launch in Ogun State

African electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Spiro has officially launched operations in Ogun State, Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in its mission to electrify mobility across the continent. Spiro, which is already active in countries like Uganda, Kenya, Benin, Togo, and Rwanda, is now bringing its innovative electric motorbikes and battery-swapping solutions to one of Africa’s largest economies.

Electrifying Nigeria: A Strategic Move

Nigeria, often referred to as Africa’s economic powerhouse, represents a critical market for Spiro's expansion. The company plans to deploy a significant number of electric bikes across eight major provinces, starting with Ogun State’s capital, Abeokuta. To support its rollout, Spiro has introduced battery-swapping stations, offering users a convenient way to replace depleted batteries with fully charged ones. Three stations are planned for the first phase in Abeokuta, with potential for further expansion.

A Vision for Sustainable Mobility

Spiro’s CEO, Kaushik Burman, described the launch as a new chapter for both Spiro and the Nigerian EV market:"We’ll deploy a significant number of bikes in our first year in Nigeria, enabling a lifestyle shift towards cleaner, more sustainable transportation options. Our goal is to electrify mobility across Africa."

With charging capabilities that include both slow and fast options, as well as a growing network of battery-swapping stations, Spiro’s electric motorbikes are designed to make the transition to EVs seamless and practical for users.

Collaboration for a Greener Nigeria

Highlighting the environmental and economic benefits of Spiro’s offerings, Rahul Gaur, Spiro’s Director of West Africa Cluster, said:"Spiro’s electric bikes promise a future of reduced environmental impact, economic savings, and improved community health. We’re proud to collaborate on this sustainable venture, setting a green standard for transportation in Nigeria."

A Growing Footprint in Africa

Spiro’s launch in Nigeria follows notable successes in other African markets. In Uganda, the company partnered with Kampala authorities to replace 140,000 internal combustion engine motorbike taxis over five years. Similarly, in Kenya, Spiro has committed to putting one million electric motorbikes on the roads, helping to transform urban mobility in the region.

The Road Ahead

As Spiro ramps up operations in Nigeria, the company is poised to play a key role in the country’s transition to sustainable transport. Its focus on battery-swapping infrastructure, coupled with partnerships that accelerate EV adoption, signals a bright future for green mobility in Nigeria.

Spiro’s expansion reinforces a growing trend in Africa: electric mobility is not just a possibility—it’s an inevitability, paving the way for cleaner, more efficient urban transport solutions across the continent.
